Key Stage 2 (7-11 years) – Moonstone Class
School Year 2021-2022
The Year Ahead in Moonstone Class
Here is a little insight into the teaching and learning that has taken place so far with the topic in Moonstone class.
What has been happening in our class in Term 1?
The marvellous Moonstones have had a super start to the new school year! We have been busy bees in literacy, investigating poetry through drama and showing an excellent understanding of the text tools needed to write a creative piece of sensory poetry. We’re so excited to share with you our finished underwater poems soon! In maths we have been exploring number and place value. Reminding ourselves of the value of each digit in a number, finding 10, 100 and 1000 more or less than and ordering numbers depending on their value.
Over the next few weeks we will continue to learn about numbers, exploring number sequences and rounding to the nearest 10, 100 and 1000. Our ‘What Lies Beneath’ topic is well under way. With learning about the Oceans of the World in Geography and delving into habitats and ecosystems in science we are expanding our understanding of our World. Soon we will be able to tell you how oceans are formed, why they are so salty and give facts about underwater ecosystems.
What has been happening in our class in Term 2?
This term in Moonstone class we have been learning about the ancient civilisation of Egypt. So far we have explored letter writing and have written in the role of an ancient Egyptian scribe as well as Howard Carter reporting back after his discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb. We have also taken great enjoyment in learning about the mummification process and have written a detailed set of instructions on how to mummify a body.
We are now beginning to learn more about Egyptian Gods and Goddesses and are exploring the myth of Osiris in preparation for writing our own story. Later this term we will be organising our own Khoiak festival, during which we will be creating our own masks for our dramatised story of Osiris, statues for our procession and planting flowers for the Gods just like the ancient Egyptians.

Drama Day – The Ancient Egyptians
Moonstone class headed back in time to Ancient Egypt. During our day at the Opet Festival we; held a procession carrying our home made Barks, had a feast fit for the Gods, performed our own belly dance accompanied by body percussion and played the Ancient Egyptian game of Senet. What a fantastic day to round off our topic work!
