Primary Education With Inspiration

Hannah Bergius

Headteacher and Class Teacher

As Headteacher of Barlavento, I feel incredibly lucky to lead such a wonderful team and school community. Our aim is simple—to create a happy, safe, and nurturing environment where every child feels valued, supported, and inspired to learn. Wellbeing is at the heart of everything we do, and we take great pride in providing a space where children can thrive, explore, play, and develop the skills they need for life beyond primary school.

At Barlavento, we offer a rich, broad, and internationally-minded curriculum, supported by specialist teachers in a diverse range of subjects—from Mindfulness and Art to Agriculture and ICT. Understanding that every child is unique, we foster an inclusive setting where all children feel valued, empowered, and able to reach their full potential.

Alongside my role as Headteacher, I also teach PSHE (Personal, Social, Health, and Emotional Education) to all classes. This allows me to build strong, meaningful relationships with every child in our school community while supporting their personal and social development. I believe learning should be fun, engaging, and meaningful, and I encourage our students to ask questions, challenge themselves, and develop into curious, thoughtful, and compassionate lifelong learners.

I am a UK-qualified Primary Teacher and EFL (English as a Foreign Language) specialist, with teaching and senior leadership experience in a variety of international and educational settings. Since 2012 I have worked in international schools in Sri Lanka, Sweden, and Portugal, as well as within the UK state system and private language schools, teaching children aged 3–14. My academic background is in Anthropology, having studied at both Degree and Master’s level at Southampton University and the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS). This has given me a deep appreciation for the richness and diversity of cultures worldwide, something I am always excited to share with our students.

Outside of school, I enjoy travelling and discovering new places, practising yoga, spending time in nature, enjoying live music, and making memories with my family and two young children.

I look forward to welcoming you to our Barlavento family!
